4 types of sticky banner ads explained

Summary

What are sticky banner ads?

As explained in a previous blog post, sticky banners are those ads which remain on screen as a user scrolls down the page, appearing to “stick” in place. As such, sticky banners can increase viewability, and ultimately revenue, since it’s more likely a visitor will see them and engage with them.

4 types of sticky banner ads

It’s important to choose the right sticky banner ads to suit the layout of your site and the behaviour of your visitors. These are the most common types of sticky banner ads we offer at Clickio:

1. Horizontal sticky (catfish)

This is the most popular and one of the most profitable formats, and can be added on either mobile or desktop. Horizontal stickies can be inserted at the top or bottom of the screen, or even used in both positions at the same time, in which case their height will normally be reduced.

With horizontal stickies, it’s a good idea to include a so-called “non-clickable area” around them to avoid accidental clicks, which can lead to penalties from Google. At the same time, it should be easy for a visitor to close the banner if so desired, in order to provide a positive user experience.

2. Vertical sticky

This is a standard sticky banner ad which appears in the sidebar, if the site has one. This means they are only practical on desktop, as they would take up too much space on a mobile screen layout. The vertical sticky will appear as the last item in the sidebar, underneath any other content or links, and then remain on screen while the user scrolls down the page.

3. Multi-sticky

This ad type is the same as a standard vertical sticky banner ad, except that multiple different ads are rotated in the same position as the user scrolls down the page. This can be great for profitability, as more ads are shown in the same space, and it also helps to combat potential “banner blindness”. Multi-stickies are particularly useful for sites with long articles.

4. Mirror sticky

These vertical stickies (most often 160×600) are placed symmetrically on the sides of the page, outside of its main content. As such, they are normally only shown on wide desktop screens.
